TCNJ drops heartbreaker 5-4 to Bates in key regional match

The 20th ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey men's tennis team hosted the Bobcats of Bates College on Wednesday afternoon. Bates, which ranked 27th nationally and seventh in the latest ITA Northeast Regional poll, came away with the 5-4 victory after a five-hour match. TCNJ drops to 9-4 overall, while Bates improves to 11-3. The loss snaps TCNJ's five-match win streak, while the Bobcats have now won four in a row.

The match was decided at sixth singles as Bates' senior captain Danilo Acosta (Quito, Ecuador) was a three-set victor of TCNJ's freshman Jonathan Yu (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), 7-5, 5-7, 7-6( 4).

TCNJ's senior Mike Klimchak (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) was a winner at first singles as he beat Bates' junior Benjamin Stein (Pelham, NY/Pelham), 6-4, 6-3. Klimchak ranks third regionally, while Stein is ranked seventh in the poll released on Tuesday. Klimchak improves to 16-8 on the year.

Klimchak and fellow classmate, Roger Mosteller (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) dropped an 8-4 decision to the top pair from Bates of Stein and sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka). Bates' duo is now 10-2 this spring and holds a No. 1 regional ranking, while Mosteller and Klimchak are now 10-4 together this season and are ranked third in the most recent regional poll.

TCNJ honored their four seniors prior to the match in conjunction with Senior Day 2008. They included Klimchak and Mosteller as well as tri-captain Eric Ferriere (Montague, NJ/Kittatinny) and Andrew Cossaboom (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland). This talented foursome has helped the Lions to a combined 40-14 dual meet record the past four seasons, while adding individual honors as well. Klimchak boasts a combined career record of 138-41, while Mosteller stands at 74-20, Ferriere is 115-39 and Cossaboom 16-7.

Ferriere teamed at second doubles with sophomore Jeremy Eckardt (Belle Mead, NJ/Mongomery) for an 8-3 win over Acosta and sophomore Zach Fenno (Armonk, NY/The Masters School) and are now 11-3 on the year and riding an eighth-match win streak together.
