NEWARK, NJ (April 22, 2008) – TCNJ senior first baseman Christina Lizzi (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) hammered a three-run homer to right centerfield in the fifth inning of game two to complete a 13-1 and 11-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference sweep of Rutgers-Newark on Alumni Field.
Lizzi, who totaled four hits and six RBI in the twinbill, went three for four and drove in five runs in game two as the Lions (22-14, NJAC 10-6) overpowered the Scarlet Raiders (5-33, NJAC 0-16).
In game one, sophomore pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) went four for four and scored twice to help her own cause. The righthander improved to 12-8 by scattering six hits while striking out six and walking just one.
Sophomore shortstop Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) went three for five with a two-run double in the fifth and a two-run single to cap a five-run sixth inning. Junior designated player Camille Heller (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) went three for four with a pair of doubles.
Losing pitcher Shauna Gallagher (Union Beach, NJ/Red Bank Regional) was the only Raider with two hits. Sophomore centerfielder Elena Morge (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) spoiled Lizzi's shutout bid by tripling to left centerfield with one out in the third and scoring on an infield grounder off the bat of senior first baseman Nikki Spampinato (Cranford, NJ/Cranford).
In game two, freshman righthander Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) yielded just four hits and one walk while striking out six to improve to 7-4 on the season.
Seavers and junior rightfielder Kelly Armstrong (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) each went two for four and scored four runs in the game. Armstrong drove in three runs with an infield grounder in the second, a triple in the fourth and a single in the fifth.\
Senior shortstop Charlotte Labate (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) had two hits to pace Rutgers-Newark, including ground-rule double to left centerfield in the fourth which plated Morge, who reached on a one-out walk, with the Raiders' only run.
Rutgers-Newark is at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday while the Lions host William Paterson in a pair of 1 p.m. NJAC doubleheaders which will end the regular-season for each team.
