Lubin's hat trick lifts Lions to season-opening win

Ewing, NJ… Senior Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) got The College of New Jersey field hockey team off to a winning start as the forward netted three goals in the first half lifting the third-ranked Lions to 5-2 victory over Millersville University on Saturday, August 30 at Lions' Stadium.

Lubin got TCNJ (1-0) off to a good start scoring midway through the opening period on a deflection on a shot from Kelly Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape).

The Marauders (0-1) didn't waste any time getting the goal back scoring 1:06 later as Emily Woodland (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) scored off of a penalty corner with Renee Fraker (New Bloomfield, PA/West Perry) and Kristie Testa (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Catholic) each earning assists.

Lubin continued the scoring for the Lions scoring back-to-back goals to complete the hat trick. The first of those goals came with 14 minutes even remaining in the half with an assist from Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and the latter 2:17 later with Mitchell picking up her second assist of the half.

TCNJ added one more goal in the half scoring with no time on the clock on a penalty corner as senior Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Heights, NJ/Henry Hudson) notched her first of the season with an assist from Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North).

The teams traded goals in the second half with Testa scoring for the Marauders and Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) for the Lions. On Mitchell's goal, freshman Allie Barrington (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) earned an assist for her first collegiate point.

In goal for the Lions, freshman Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) made three saves for her first victory.

For Millersville, Jessica Heckman (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) made nine saves and Sara Dickinson (Millersville, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) had five.

TCNJ will be back on the field on Thursday, September 4 hosting Cabrini College in a 7:30 p.m. start at Lions' Stadium.
