Wayne, PA… Playing on the road for the first time this season, The College of New Jersey field hockey team slipped past an upset-minded Eastern University squad by the score of 2-1 needing penalty strokes to pull out the victory on Thursday. The teams were deadlocked at a goal apiece through 100 minutes of play before the Lions secured the win holding a 3-2 edge in strokes.
The win kept the Lions, which moved up a spot to second in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, undefeated for the season at 3-0. The loss was the second straight for the Eagles as they fell to 3-2 with both losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents.
TCNJ opened the scoring 11:24 into the game as senior Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Heights, NJ/Henry Hudson) scored for the third straight game with an assist from freshman Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South).
The Eagles tied the game with a goal 41 seconds into the second half and that score held through the rest of regulation and a pair of overtime periods.
The Lions won the game in strokes as Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Okuniewicz scored before Kellyn Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) scored what proved to be the deciding goal.
Picking up her third straight win in goal for the Lions was Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) as the freshman finished with four saves.
TCNJ is right back on the field on Saturday heading to Manhattanville College to take on the Valiants in a 2 p.m. start.
