Three first-half goals lift Lions past Kean in NJAC opener

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team kicked off New Jersey Athletic Conference play on a winning note as the Lions shutout visiting Kean University by the score of 3-0 on Saturday. The top-ranked Lions took charge early scoring all three of their goals in the opening half.

The win kept TCNJ's impressive NJAC streak without a loss alive as they are unbeaten in the last 37 conference games going 35-0-2 in the span. The Lions are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Cougars slipped to 0-1 in the NJAC and 4-2 overall.

TCNJ had its offense clicking early as senior Jamie Kunkel (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) netted her third of the season off of a nice cross from the near side by classmate Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood). That goal came 13:09 into the contest.

The Lions made it 2-0 as senior Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) chipped a shot over a diving Leandra Russo (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) with an assist from Jaclyn Levowsky (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills). The final goal of the period came with 2:42 on the clock as senior Laura Delaney (River Vale, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) scoring off of a direct kick.

Sophomore keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Katie Piotrowski (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic) shared the shutout with Piotrowski making a pair of saves in the second half.

In goal for the Cougars, Russo finished with a dozen saves.

Next up for the Lions is another conference tilt hosting rival Rowan University on Wednesday, September 24 at 5 p.m. in Lions' Stadium. Kean is also in action on Wednesday heading to New Jersey City University for a 4 p.m. contest.
