Ewing NJ… In a showdown of two highly-ranked programs, sixth-ranked Ursinus College handed third-ranked The College of New Jersey field hockey team its first loss of the season as the Bears held on a for a 2-1 victory over the Lions on Tuesday.
Both teams now sit at 5-1 on the season.
Ursinus wasted no time grabbing the lead scoring on its first shot of the game as Jen Hoover (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) redirected a pass from Jessica Zatwarnicki (Reading, PA/Exeter) just 2:01 into the contest.
The Bears made it a 2-0 game in the latter stages of the second half as Hoover again got on the board knocking in a rebound.
Junior Gabby Cafone (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) pulled the Lions to within a goal with 6:22 remaining in regulation. Cafone's fourth goal of the season was assisted by senior Maggie Rarich (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley).
Goaltender Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) finished with a career-best nine saves for TCNJ.
In goal for the Bears, junior Erica Scott (Carneys Point, NJ/St. Elizabeth) collected her fifth win of the season with a pair of saves.
TCNJ opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Friday, September 26 hosting William Paterson University at 7:30 p.m. The Bears return home for a key Centennial Conference showdown with Dickinson College on Saturday at noon.
