Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team posted its second straight win to open the season as the Lions rolled past visiting Cabrini College by the count of 5-0 on Thursday at Lions' Stadium.
The win put the third-ranked Lions at 2-0 on the season, while the Cavaliers suffered their first defeat of the young season falling to 2-1.
The Lions opened up a 2-0 lead in the opening half as junior Gabby Cafone (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored 12:08 into the game with an assist from sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). The goal was Cafone's first of the season. TCNJ doubled its advantage with 2:26 left in the opening period as Kellyn Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) cashed in on a pass from Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) making it 2-0.
In the second half, the hosts netted a pair of goals in a span of 2:32, again doubling their lead. The first of those came from freshman Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) with Kelly Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) picking up the assist. The second goal came when Leigh Mitchell netted her second of the season with an assist going to Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). That goal came with 23:01 left in the half.
TCNJ closed out the scoring with 13:59 left on the clock as senior Kendra Boyd (Atlantic Heights, NJ/Henry Hudson) scored unassisted. It was her second goal in as many games.
In goal for the Lions, freshman Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Jackson) made one save for her second win of the of the year.
For Cabrini, Caitlin Donahue (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) turned in a tremendous performance with 19 saves.
TCNJ has the weekend off and return to the field on Thursday, September 11 for its first road game of the season at Eastern University. Game time is 4 p.m.
