Montclair, NJ... Eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey field hockey team outlasted Montclair State as the Lions slipped past the Red Hawks after two rounds of penalty strokes to post a 2-1 win on Friday.
The Lions have now won 20 straight New Jersey Athletic Conference games and are 2-0 in conference play this season and 6-1 overall.
Sophomore Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) scored an even 13 minutes into the game, but the Red Hawks then tied the score.
The team then went through a pair of scoreless overtime periods and two rounds of shooters in penalty strokes before a winner was determined.
Sophomore goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) finished with 11 saves and denied the Red Hawks on six of their eight penalty strokes.
The Lions venture out of conference on Tuesday, October 6 as ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University visits Lions' Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. start.
