Glassboro, NJ ... The College of New Jersey football season came to a close as host Rowan University put forth a well-balanced offensive and defensive attack to down the Lions 39-0.
Prof quarterback
Frank Wilczynksi (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) had a tremendous afternoon in his final game rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for two more as Rowan scored in every quarter while racking up 541 yards of total offense. Wilczynski struck through the air midway through the first quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass to senior
Vinnie Graff (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn). He then produced rushing scores from 10 and 19 yards out before hitting sophomore
Kevin DellDonne (Summit, NJ/Summit) with a 16-yard scoring strike as Rowan closed the half with a 28-0 lead.
TCNJ (4-6, 3-6 NJAC) had difficulty sustaining any type of drive on offense against a Prof defense that was ranked second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in scoring defense and first in run defense entering the game. Rowan (7-3, 6-3 NJAC) forced the Lions to punt 10 times as TCNJ was limited to 52 total yards on offense.
Senior
Bill Picatagi (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) caught a pair of passes for 20 yards in his final game for TCNJ. Senior
Cameron Richardson (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) also caught a 46-yard pass from sophomore quarterback
James Donohue (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) in his final game.
Punter
Marc Zucconi (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross), who entered the game as the top punter in the NJAC, averaged 41.4 yards per boot on the day. He registered a 61-yard punt and also left two kicks inside the 20-yardline.
On defense, freshman
Greg Burns (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) assisted on 12 tackles.
Shawn Brown (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) 11 tackles (6 solo), while junior
Matthew Kreider (Delran, NJ/Delran) added to his team lead in tackles with 11 (5 solo).
While the season showed promise early on for TCNJ, tough NJAC opponents coupled with injuries to major offensive and defensive contributers hindered the Lions in the second half of 2009. The team did, however, put its stamp on TCNJ's record books.
The 2009 squad set the record for points in a game when they piled up 67 against Morrisville State. Their 309 points in a season is a program record as well as their 708 total yards of offense in a game against Farleigh Dickinson-Florham. Senior quarterback
Chris James (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and Donoghue combined to set the record for the most completions in a season with 166. Zucconi set a record for the most point after attempts with 42 and tied a record for most PAT's made with 37.
James etched his name in the record book by becoming the all-time leader in pass completions (464), pass attempts (894), and passing yards (5,871).
Head coach Eric Hamilton will look towards his 34th season in 2010 to earn his 200th career win. Through 2009, he has run off the field a winner 196 times.
