Collegeville, PA... The College of New Jersey wrestling team boasted four individual champions as the team competed at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl on Saturday.
Two of the final matches featured teammates competing for the title with the first of those being at 141 pounds. Sophomore Jim Somma (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) edged out freshman Anthony Damico (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) by the score of 4-3 as the Lions claimed the top two spots in the weight class. Somma finished the tournament winning all four of his matches, while Damico won three of four.
The other final to feature a pair of TCNJ wrestlers was at 165 pounds as Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) slipped past Al Wonesh (Columbus, NJ/North Burlington), 4-2. Bonitatis was undefeated in four bouts improving to 5-0 on the young season.
Graduate student Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) won the 157-pound bracket as he cruised with four wins, including two by fall. In the finals, DiColo posted a 4-0 decision over David Dennis from Washington and Lee University.
Freshman Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) collected his first tournament win as a Lion claiming the title at 174 pounds. Broderick scored an 18-1 win by technical fall in the finals beating Will Harcum from the Apprentice School.
TCNJ had two other grapplers advance to the finals as sophomore Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) was second at 133 and Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished in that same spot at heavyweight.
The Lions had two more wrestlers battle their way back in the consolation brackets to finish third. Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) won five matches to finish third at 184, while Adam Koziol (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) won three times at 197 to place third.
The Lions return to dual meet action on Wednesday, November 18 hosting Hunter College in Packer Hall in a 3 p.m. start.
