Lions lose tight battle with Moravian

Box score

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's basketball team dropped their second straight heartbreaker of the season as Moravian College pulled out a 72-68 win at Packer Hall.

Despite strong offensive performances from junior Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and sophomore Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) the Lions were victimized by the clutch shooting of Greyhound sophomore Hillary Murray (Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon) down the stretch.

With the score tied at 66, TCNJ sophomore Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) drained a 18-footer with 44 seconds remaining to give the Lions a 68-66 lead. Murray responded by drilling a three-pointer with 29 seconds left to give Moravian a 69-68 advantage. After missing a free throw, she sank her next three attempts from the foul line to give the Greyhounds their second win of the season.

The Lions (0-2) led 35-33 at the intermission. The first 20 minutes literally went back and forth as there were nine lead changes and 11 ties. Tait sent TCNJ into the locker room with a two-point cushion burrying a shot at the buzzer from just inside the three-point line.

TCNJ took control in the second half putting together a 9-0 run and led 47-41 with 14:06 remaining. The Lions maintained command until Moravian took the lead for the first time in the second half with a bucket at the 3:40 mark to go up 63-62. They tacked on a point on a free throw to go up 64-62, but the Lions tied it up when Katie Occhipinti (Warren, NJ/The Pingry School) hit Tait with a pass under the basket to knot the score at 64.

Kutch finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds. Tait scored 19 points to along with seven assists and six rebounds. Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) added 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Greyhounds were led by Krity Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay) who had 15 points, Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) with 14 points, and Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) who had 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

TCNJ matches up with Swarthmore College on Saturday, November 21 at 1 p.m. in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament. Moravian is also scheduled to play Saturday at 8 p.m. against St. Vincent College in the Days' Inn Tip-Off Tournament held at Dickinson College.
