Swarthmore, PA…The College of New Jersey women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a balanced effort as the Lions beat the host institution in the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament with a 69-43 victory.
TCNJ (1-2) caps the two-day tournament on Sunday facing Haverford College at 3 p.m.
Nine different players earned their way into the scorebook for the Lions as they were led by sophomore Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) and junior Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) as the each player scored 12 points. Senior Karen Lassoni (East Rutherford, NJ/East Rutherford) and junior Stephanie Prall (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) each chipped in with nine points, while junior Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) added to the win with eight points.
It was a close game at the half as the Lions led 29-23, but got even closer at the start of the second as the Garnet netted the first five points in the second making it a one-point game. The teams then stayed close with TCNJ holding a 39-34 lead before Lions pulled away.
TCNJ then went on a huge 25-0 run and held the Garnet scoreless for 9:33 to gain control with a 64-34 advantage. The Lions doubled up Swarthmore in the second half outscoring the Garnet 40-20.
