Lions drop 15-inning marathon, 5-3

Ewing, NJ –The College of New Jersey's baseball team hosted Ursinus College in a non-conference make up contest on Saturday. The game would go 15 innings and the Bears would collect the 5-3 victory. Ursinus stands at 8-5 on the year, while the Lions drop to 6-7-1.

Ursinus College used four pitchers, while the Lions used five in the extra-inning duel. Ursinus starter junior Luis Serrano (Toa Alta, PR) worked five innings for the Bears with a pair of earned runs off three hits with a pair of strikeouts and four walks. Senior Zeb Engle (Spring City, PA/Spring-Ford) worked five innings in relief and gave up an earned run off four hits with three K's before senior Scott Young (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) entered the game and worked four scoreless innings to collect the win and is now 3-1 on the year. He fanned two with five walks and got assistance in the end from senior Ryan Schmidt (Allentown, PA/Parkland) who earned the save with his one scoreless inning of work.

TCNJ's sophomore Connor Henderson (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick) started for the Lions and worked six innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs off four hits. Junior Greg Spatz (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) worked a pair of innings for the Lions with three K's before sophomore Joe Marchitelli (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) worked two scoreless innings with three K's. Senior pitcher Eric Gertie (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) added three innings for the Lions allowing three hits and fanning two Bears before junior Sean Flanagan (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) entered the game and took the eventual loss after allowing two runs off two hits with a pair of walks and a wild pitch.

In the top of the 15th, the Bears broke the 3-3 tie when with one out, junior Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon) walked. Young singled and Clarke advanced. Freshman Ben Gresh (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) pinch ran for Young. Sophomore Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, NJ/The Hill School) singled to drive in Clarke and give Ursinus a 4-3 lead. The Bears tacked on one more run when with two outs Gresh was able to score on a wild pitch and give his team a 5-3 lead.

Ursinus held on the bottom the inning as with one out freshman Jimmy Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) doubled, but then the Lions had back to back ground outs in the infield to end the rally.

For the game, TCNJ's senior Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) was 4-5, a double and added a run and a stolen base, while Ursinus's Vogt was 3-6 with a pair of RBI's.
