Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team exploded for 11 goals in the second half to break open a tight game as the Lions posted an 18-8 victory over visiting St. Mary's College on Sunday.
The win kept the fourth-ranked Lions undefeated on the year at 6-0, while the 17th-ranked Seahawks slipped to 9-3.
The teams played a close first half with score being tied three times before the Lions scored twice in the final 45 seconds with freshman Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) getting the first of those putting back a rebound. Sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) made it a 7-5 TCNJ with 12 seconds remaining in the half.
Senior Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) did a bulk of the damage of the Seahawks in the opening frame as she scored four of the team's five goals.
The Lions broke things open in the second scoring 11 times, while TCNJ's defense also did its part allowing St. Mary's only two goals in the first 29 minutes of the half.
Mitchell had a banner day for the Lions with a career-high seven goals and nine points. Sophomore Alison Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) had a well-rounded effort with four goals, an assist, to go along with seven draw controls. Notos added to the Lion attack with three goals on one helper.
Carrier finished with five goals for the Seahawks.
Sophomore Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) picked up her sixth win of the season making six saves.
In goal for St. Mary's, freshman Colleen Simpson (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) made 11 saves.
TCNJ continues their three-game homestand on Tuesday, March 31 hosting in-state opponent Drew University at 7:30 p.m., while the Seahawks don't play until April 4 when they head to Salisbury University.
