Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey softball team's offense came alive at the right time on Friday as the Lions pulled off a doubleheader sweep of visiting Rutgers-Camden. TCNJ rallied for a 3-2 win in eight innings in the opening game and then collected an 8-0 triumph in the second game with that contest lasting five innings.
The two wins puts the Lions at 8-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and 19-13 overall, while Rutgers-Camden slipped to 19-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
TCNJ also improved to 11-1 at Lions' Park this season.
Both teams play another conference doubleheader on Saturday as the Lions head to Ramapo College to take on the Roadrunners, while the Scarlet Raptors remain on the road traveling to William Paterson University. Both twin bills start at 1 p.m.
TCNJ 3, Rutgers-Camden 2 (8 Innings)
The Lions scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out the win in the opening game. Senior Kelly Armstrong (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) scored on a base hit by freshman Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls), while Lee later scored the winning run on a Scarlet Raptor miscue.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the scoring in the top of the first as junior Steph Skroski (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) hit a two-out homer to left.
TCNJ forced extra innings in the latter half of the sixth as junior Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) singled scoring Lee.
The Scarlet Raptors also scored in the eighth as Amanda D'Anduono (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) raced home when Vickie D'Anduono (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) was tagged out in a rundown after reaching on an error.
Lion freshman Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) picked up her ninth win of the season tossing a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Senior Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) pitched well for Rutgers-Camden despite taking the loss allowing on one earned run in 7.1 innings.
TCNJ 8, Rutgers-Camden 0 (5 innings)
The Lions exploded for six runs in the third inning as Hagel and Armstrong each plated three runs with one swing of the bat. Hagel belted a three-run homer to left and Armstrong cleared the bases with a double.
In the fourth, the Lions padded the lead to 8-0 as sophomore Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) walked with the bases loaded and sophomore Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) drove in the other with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Sietsma picked up the shutout for the Lions scattering five hits and recording five strikeouts.
For Rutgers-Camden, Brooke Keenan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) finished with two hits.
