Pitching again keys Lions to victory

Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey softball team halted Haverford College's modest five-game winning streak as the Lions continued to excel on the their home field. TCNJ won the opening game on Thursday with another shutout beating the Fords by the score of 1-0 and then completed the sweep with a 5-2 triumph.

The pair of wins put the Lions at 12-11 on the season and a 7-1 at home, while Haverford College fell to 11-7.

The Lions resume New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 4 hosting Rutgers University-Newark in a doubleheader at 1 p.m., while the Fords return home to face McDaniel College.

Pitchers Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and sophomore Jamie Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) teamed up for TCNJ's sixth shutout at Lions' Park as Fitzsimmons improved to 6-3, while Moir picked up her first save of the year. Fitzsimmons went 6.2 innings with three strikeouts and Moir retired the only batter she faced with the tying run at second base in the top of the seventh.

The Lions scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the second as junior Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) led off with a triple and scored one batter later as Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) dropped a single into right field.

For Haverford, Dana Irshay (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Lions struck first in the second game Hagel singled and came around to score on a double by freshman Katelyn Congilose (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).

The Fords took their first lead of the game in the third as Becky Garibotto (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stephens) and Beth Davis (Minneapolis, MN/Blake School) each touched home plate.

TCNJ bounced right back to score twice in the latter half of the inning as Seavers brought in a run with sacrifice fly and senior Kelly Armstrong (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) put the Lions back in front with a RBI single.

TCNJ added another run in the fifth on a run-scoring single from Hagel and Seavers plated the final run of the game in the last of the sixth with a double.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) picked up her first win of the season tossing a complete game.
