Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team put an end to the Stevens Institute of Technology's bid for a perfect season as the Lions posted a 20-11 win on “Senior Night” over the Ducks on Tuesday.
That win extended TCNJ's home winning streak to 13 straight, while the Ducks lost for the first time after reeling off 18 straight victories dating back to last season. The Lions are now 14-2 on the season, with Stevens slipping to 15-1.
The fifth-ranked Lions fell behind the 12th-ranked Ducks 2-0 in the early stages of the game before taking a lead for good on a goal by sophomore Alison Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) with 16:22 remaining in the opening half. That goal was the 100th of her brief career at TCNJ.
TCNJ protected that lead the rest of the opening frame going into the break with a 9-4 advantage.
In the second half, Stevens closed to within five goals at 12-7, but that would be as close as they would get.
The 18 goals scored by the Lions were the most allowed this season by the Ducks, while TCNJ also held Stevens to its season-low goal total.
Freshman Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) paced all scorers with five goals, while Jaeger scored four goals and had a pair of assists. Senior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) also scored four goals, while Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) netted three. Senior Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) finished with five points scoring twice and picking up three assists.
Sophomore Leah Wasserman (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) led the Ducks with four goals.
TCNJ goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) notched the win for the Lions with three saves
For Stevens, senior Grace Sack (Cazenovia, NY/Manlius-Pebble Hill) made 12 stops.
The Lions close out the regular season on Thursday at Rowan University with the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship on the line, while this weekend the Ducks will serve as the host for the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
