Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey softball team picked up two more wins at Lions' Park on Sunday as the Lions took a doubleheader from visiting Rutgers University-Newark. TCNJ posted a 12-1 win in five innings in the opener before closing the day out with an 8-0 victory, also in five innings.
Those two wins put the Lions at 4-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and 15-11 overall. TCNJ has taken advantage of playing at home this season as they are 9-1.
Rutgers-Newark is now 1-19 on the year and 0-6 in the conference.
The Lions continue conference play with a doubleheader at Richard Stockton College, while Rutgers-Newark remains on the road heading to Montclair State University. Both of those twin bills are on Tuesday, April 7 with 3 p.m. starts.
TCNJ 12, Rutgers-Newark 1 (5 innings)
Starting pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) picked up her sixth win of the season going four innings and sophomore Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) threw a perfect fifth inning to lead the Lions to a win in the opening game.
The Lions grabbed the lead from the start scoring five times in the bottom of the first with sophomore Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) provided the big hit in the inning with a two-run double. TCNJ would end up scoring five runs in the inning with two others coming home on passed balls.
The hosts then upped that advantage to 6-0 in the second as freshman Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls) scored on a Scarlet Raider miscue.
Rutgers-Newark got the run back in the top of the third as sophomore Jessica Zelaya (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) tripled home Ashley Angeli (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) to make it a 6-1 game.
TCNJ added two more runs in the third and four more in the fourth making the final margin 12-1. In the fourth, Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) accounted for half of those runs with a two-run single.
TCNJ 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 innings)
Sophomore Jamie Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) made the most of her first start of the season tossing a one-hitter with six strikeouts for her second win of the season. At one point, she retired 14 straight batters.
After the Lions plated a run in the second on a RBI double by Hagel, the team exploded for six more in the fourth. Sophomore Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) accounted for two of those runs with a base hit before Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) blasted a two-run homer later in the inning making it a 7-0 contest.
Moir plated the game's final run in the top of the fifth as she doubled home Hagel, who reached base on a walk.
