Ewing, NJ… Gettysburg College held off a last-second attempt by The College of New Jersey to force overtime as the Bullets held on for a 10-9 win over the Lions on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships.
The win sends Gettysburg (16-3) to the national semifinals where they will face Salisbury University on May 16 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, VA. That game will be played at 5 p.m.
The Lions capped their successful season with a record of 16-3.
The game was tight throughout with the Bullets taking a 10-8 lead late in the second half as junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored unassisted with 6:34 remaining, while Heidi Bitter (Darien, CT/Westminster) cashed in a free-position shot with 4:55 left.
TCNJ fought back to within a goal as freshman Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored with 4:04 left on the clock making it a one-goal game at 10-9.
After Gettysburg ran off a majority of the time on the clock off, the Lions did get one final chance in the closing seconds as the Bullets turned the ball over deep in their end of the field. Gettysburg's defense then closed the door not allowing TCNJ's Alison Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) an opportunity to get off a quality shot as her attempt went wide to the near post as time expired.
This was the second one-goal game the teams played this season with the Lions pulling out an 11-10 win in Gettysburg back in April.
The last time these teams met in the NCAA Tournament, the Lions won the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championship topping the Bullets by the score of 10-4.
The Bullets grabbed an early 3-1 lead as junior Nina Emala (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) score two of those goals and Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, NJ/Peddie School) recorded the other.
TCNJ close out the half with a 3-1 run of its own as Jaeger, junior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), and freshman Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) each tallied in that spurt sending the teams into the half deadlocked at five all.
In the second frame, the Bullets scored the first goal as TCNJ countered with a pair taking what turned out to be its final lead of the game at 7-6.
The Bullets had four players finish with two goals each and that group included Allegra Formento (Princeton, NJ/Princeton), Emala, Stahl and Bitter.
Jaeger led all players with four goals and Notos and Seldeen each scored a pair of TCNJ.
In goal for the Bullets, Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) made 10 saves to earn the win.
Sophomore goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) collected eight saves for the Lions.
