Ewing, NJ...Playing in a steady rain, The College of New Jersey field hockey team handled both the inclement weather and visiting Manhattanville College on Thursday as the Lions rolled to their second straight win beating the Valiants, 4-0.
The fifth-ranked Lions are now 2-0 on the season and have scored 13 goals in those two victories, while Manhattanville slipped to 1-2.
TCNJ turned in another strong effort offensively as they used a pair of goals 1:01 apart in the first half to get things rolling. Junior Kellyn Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) opened the scoring 6:20 into the game and sophomore Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) tacked on the latter of those two putting the hosts in front, 2-0.
Okuniewicz then made it a 3-0 TCNJ lead as she netted an unassisted marker with 17:55 showing on the clock. That score held the remainder of the half.
Riley picked up her fifth goal of the young season midway through the second half to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had three saves to pick up her first shutout of the season.
In goal for the Valiants, Melissa Barry (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) finished with 15 saves.
TCNJ has another non-conference game on Tuesday, September 15 hosting Eastern University, while the Valiants will play a pair of games in the Vassar Tournament this weekend.
