Box Score
Ewing, NJ... Sophomore goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made a career-high 13 saves as The College of New Jersey field hockey team held off visiting Eastern University by the score of 2-1 on Tuesday.
The fourth-ranked Lions are now 3-0 on the season, while the Eagles are an even 3-3.
The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 in the opening half and then protected that lead in the second. Syciarz was steady throughout as she made seven saves in the first half then turned aside six more in the final frame. Eastern outshot TCNJ 16-9 in the game.
Freshman Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) opened the scoring for the Lions as she batted in her own rebound with 20:54 showing on the clock.
Jenkins factored in on TCNJ's second goal as well as her centering pass was redirected into the Eastern net by senior Gabby Cafone (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) making it a two-goal cushion. That goal came just 1:15 before the break and was her first of the season.
Eastern cut the deficit in half just over six minutes into the second half as Yvonne Herbster (Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) picked up her fourth goal of the season.
That would be as close as the Eagles would get as Syciarz closed the door securing the win for the Lions.
Eastern goalie Laura Ressler (Media, PA/Delaware County Christian) finished with four saves.
TCNJ caps its four-game homestand on Saturday, September 19 hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham in a 3 p.m. start at Lions' Stadium, while the Eagles are right back on the field on Thursday heading to Widener University. That game is set for 7 p.m.
