Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey men's soccer team surrendered a game-tying goal with nine seconds to play in regulation before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to 10th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks (5-1) were awarded a penalty kick with 8:31 to play in the first overtime period and escaped Lions' Stadium with their fifth victory of the season.
Kevin Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first half when he blasted a shot from 25 yards out at the 8:19 mark. It was the first goal of the season for Luber, who led TCNJ in scoring a year ago. The Lions (2-2-2) dominated the majority of the opening period, outshooting the Ducks 9-3, but the momentum shifted as Stevens came out hungry following the intermission.
The defensive backfield of senior
Adam Dorflinger (Seargentsville, NJ/Hunterdon Central), juniors Matt Erny (Delran, NJ/Delran), Mike Razzoli (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), and
Phil Cunha (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) played exceptional soccer in front of goalkeeper
Eric Goldwaser (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills). The TCNJ defense staved off several offensive attacks from the Ducks to maintain their one-goal cushion. With 9:05 left to play, Cunha seemingly saved the day when a head ball off of a corner kick floated past Goldwaser. But the mindful junior stayed inside the near post off the corner kick and headed the potential game-tying goal out of the net.
With less than 30 seconds to play in regulation, Stevens brought the ball down the left sideline and sent a ground pass in front of the goalmouth. The ball was deflected and skipped past Goldwaser where the Ducks senior Josh Williams was in position off the far post to knock home the loose ball.
In overtime, Stevens forward Victor Daza received a through pass and went in one-on-one with Goldwaser. The Lions keeper took Daza down and the Ducks were awarded a penalty kick at the 8:31 mark of the first overtime. Freshman Zach Adler rifled home the free kick for his fourth goal of the season, sending a team of stunned TCNJ players off the field with their second loss of the season.
TCNJ will begin conference play this Saturday, September 19 when they host NJAC opponent Kean University at 1 p.m. at TCNJ Soccer Complex.
