Bench play lifts TCNJ past Rutgers-Camden

Sophomore Al Matlock netted a career-high 18 points in the win.

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey men's basketball team received a tremendous lift from their bench in the second half to storm past Rutgers University-Camden 73-60.

Sophomore Al Matlock (Trenton, NJ/Solebury) scored a career-high 18 points off the bench to lead the Lions to their fifth consecutive win. TCNJ raised their overall record to 9-5 and are now an even 2-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

The Lions were in control of the game holding a 33-27 lead at the half, but the Scarlet Raptors (4-8, 05 NJAC) cut loose on a 16-0 run in the second half. Head coach Kelly Williams put in fresh legs that led to a 25-8 run by TCNJ that was spearheaded by 10 straight points from Matlock.

Jay Frank (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) finished with 14 points and junior Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the winning effort.

RUC's Kevin Brown (Port Norris, NJ/Millville) had a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Shawn Green (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) chipped in with 11 points while Jared Meredith (Lakewood, NJ/BCIT-Medford) added seven points and three assists.

TCNJ freshman Pat Szukics (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) contributed sevent points and a pair of assists off the bench while senior Christoph Schoenbeck (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) shot three-for-four from the field to finish with six points.

The Lions are back in action this Saturday, January 16 at home against New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Rutgers University-Newark. The men's game plays the second end of the double-header at 3 p.m. The women's match is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Saturday, January 16 when they host New Jersey City University at 1 p.m.
