Men's swimming sweeps tri-meet

Sophomore Ryan Clark contributed to a pair of winning relay races.

Ewing, NJ ... The College of New Jersey men's swimming team picked up right where they left on in 2009 as they streaked to victories over visiting Johns Hopkins University and West Chester University. 

The Lions topped the Blue Jays 183-175 and the Golden Rams 203-167 pushing their season record to 6-1.

Sophomore Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) led the way winning three individual events and contributed to a first-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Vernoia won the 100-yard freestyle event (47.46) the 200-yard free (1:41.53), the 500-yard free (4:43.31).

In the 800-yard free relay, Vernoia, junior Pete Goldsmith (Easton, PA/Easton), junior Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), and sophomore Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) posted a winning time of 7:00.88.

Medvecky also claimed multiple events winning the 100-yard butterfly (51.70) and the 200-yard fly (1:56.03) events.

Clark joined a group of underclassmen in sophomore Kevin Cain, (Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) freshman Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), and freshman Brian Giacopelli (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay finishing in 1:26.52. Schneider also claimed the 50-yard free in 21.47 seconds.

Myles O'Connor (Santa Monica, CA) continued his strong season winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 58.09.

In the diving competition, sophomore T.J. Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) placed second in the 1-meter event with a score of 319.20 and third place in the 3-meter event posting 333.85. Freshman Billy Cavallo (Vineland, NJ/Cumberland) finished fourth in the 3-meter dive with a score of 267.98. 

The Lions look to remain hot when they travel to New York University next Saturday, January 23. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
