Lions claim second straight NJAC title

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team won their second straight New Jersey Athletic Conference championship defeating Rowan University at TCNJ's Aquatic Center.

The Lions (9-1, 4-0 NJAC) bested the Profs by a score of 177-122. Since men's and women's swimming returned to the NJAC as a sport last year, both Lions' squads have claimed back-to-back titles.

Seniors Myles O'Connor (Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica J.C.) and James VanBiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) got the pool heated up early on senior day as they led the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 1:36.56.

O'Connor also took first in the 100-breast with a time of 58.51 while VanBiervliet placed second in the 100-back (54.71) behind teammate Kevin Cain (Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit).

Senior Eric Rohrs (Congers,NY/Clarkstown North) contributed to the NJAC title-clincher by winning the 200-breast in 2:15.58 and placing second behind O'Connor in the 100-breast with a finishing time of (54.84). Senior Herman Chu (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) notched a first-place win in the 100-butterfly tapping the wall in 53.94 seconds.

Junior Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and freshman Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) were multiple event winners for the Lions while freshman Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis), junior Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), and freshman Andrew Smith (Basking Ridge, NJ/Mo-town Beard) also won individual events.

Sophomore T.J. Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) won the 1-meter diving event posting a score of 281.55.

The Lions return to the waters on February 19 when they compete in the Metropolitan Conference Championships held at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ.
