Mahwah, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team moved into a first-place tie in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings as the Lions picked up a 4-0 shutout win at Ramapo College on Tuesday.
The victory ties the 11th-ranked Lions with 13th-ranked Rowan University for the top spot in the conference as both teams have 3-0 league marks. The two programs meet in the final game of the regular season on November 5 in Glassboro. Overall, TCNJ is 11-3 on the season.
Against the Roadrunners, the Lions opened the scoring on a goal from junior Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) with an assist from junior Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) on a play that started with a penalty corner. That goal came with 16:42 showing on the clock
Senior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) doubled that lead late in the half netting her first of the season 1:58 before the break.
In the second half, TCNJ scored a pair of goals 4:15 apart with Mitchell getting the first of those goals 12:47 into the half with an assist from Waller. Mitchell also factored in on the second score as she set up sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) for her eighth goal of the season.
TCNJ's defense was solid throughout allowing only a pair of shots, while goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) stopped them both picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
The Lions remain on the road this weekend heading to fifth-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
