Lions fall to Skidmore 3-2 in overtime

Saratoga Springs, NY… Skidmore College's Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, NY) scored 7:11 into the first overtime to lift the Thoroughbreds pulled out a 3-2 victory over The College of New Jersey in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, Saturday at Thoroughbred Field.

With the loss, the ninth-ranked Lions finish another successful season with a record of 17-5.

Kemp got the scoring started at the 13:39 mark when Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, MA) sent a pass into the circle that Kemp blasted past TCNJ goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) for her 26th goal of the season and a 1-0 Thoroughbred lead.

Loin sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) tied it for the Lions, when she put home a loose ball in front of the net at the 28:59 mark for her 17th goal of the year. Skidmore answered right back as Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, CT) tallied her 18th goal on a penalty corner. McCarthy and Carolyne McManama (Medfield, MA) assisted to help the Thoroughbreds take a 2-1 lead into the half.

TCNJ tied it 2-2 when Leah Geissler (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) scored on a loose ball in front of the cage, beating Skidmore keeper Liz Catinella (Sudbury, MA) at the 42:10 mark for her second goal of the season.

The Lions looked as though they were going to take the lead with just over 13 minutes remaining but Jackie Slocombe (Amherst, MA) chased down Jillian Nealon (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) to stop a breakaway and keep the score tied.

Catinella came up with the defensive play of the game with just 36 seconds remaining in regulation as she made a sprawling save on Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) to force the overtime.

TCNJ controlled possession through most of the overtime period, earning five penalty corners. After a brief injury timeout, Kemp was able to break away from the defense and get a shot on goal that Syciarz made the initial save on, but a persistent Kemp was able to score on her own rebound from her knees to give the Thoroughbreds a 3-2 victory.

Catinella finished with nine saves in the win, setting the single-season Skidmore record with 19. Syciarz stopped 11 shots for the Lions.

Skidmore outshot TCNJ, 19-15, while the Lions held a 21-12 advantage in penalty corners.
