Balanced offense carries TCNJ to 65-55 victory

Elizabethtown, PA... The College of New Jersey women's basketball team had 11 different players score as the Lions opened the R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic with a 65-55 victory over Delaware Valley College on Friday.

The win puts the Lions at 3-4 on the season, while the Aggies dipped to 4-5. TCNJ rounds out play in the tournament on Saturday as they face Wilkes University, which lost to the host Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College 92-57 in the opening game of the night.

The Lions got off to a good start as they grabbed 10-5 lead just 3:46 into the game as senior Alex Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) dropped in a lay-up with an assist from classmate Nicole Diaz (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.).

After the Aggies bounced back to claim an 11-10 lead, TCNJ responded with a 14-4 run as freshman Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) sparked that spurt scoring seven points, including a 3-pointer. That run put the Lions in front 24-15.

Things continued to roll TCNJ's way the rest of the half as the Lions went into the break holding a 37-27 lead.

In the second half, the Lions quickly added to their lead as DeTulio knocked down a jumper followed by a 3-pointer from junior Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) making it a 42-27 contest. TCNJ continued that run as Gregorek converted from in the lane and Diaz connected from behind the 3-point arc as the Lions opened with a 10-0 run.

The Lions protected that lead the rest of the way maintaining a double-digit advantage until the final buzzer.

Tait led the balanced TCNJ offense with 11 points, while Gregorek finished with 10 points and Diaz and DeTulio each collected nine.
