Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's basketball team ran into the hottest Division III team in the country as Kean University won their 23rd straight game upending the Lions 87-52.
TCNJ now needs a victory at Richard Stockton College on Wednesday night to qualify for post-season play.
Stephanie Prall (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) led the Lions (13-11, 6-6 NJAC) matching her career-high with 14 points. Junior Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) added nine points and five rebounds, while Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdown Central) also tallied nine points.
TCNJ played tough early on, but Kean (23-1, 12-0 NJAC) simply had too much firepower and pulled away late in the opening half to stake a 43-28 halftime lead. Senior Melissa Beyruti (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) buried a trio of three-pointers to give her 389 for her career. Beyruti, who finished with 15 points, is now three, three-pointers shy of the NCAA record of 392 set by Laurie Koehn of Kansas State in 2005.
The Cougars came out strong in the second half mounting a 16-0 run to extend their lead to 65-35 before Imhof drained a baseline jumper. The Lions played hard, but shot just 31 percent from the floor against a tenacious Kean defense.
Junior Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) led Kean with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Naimah Clemons (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech.) had a quality game scoring nine points, dishing out six assists, and grabbing 10 boards.
TCNJ travels to Richard Stockton on Wednesday, February for their must-win showdown beginning at 6 p.m.
