Glassboro, NJ…The College of New Jersey women's basketball team saw its chance to move into a tie for second place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference South Division slip away as Rowan University used a big second half to hold off the Lions 56-47 on Wednesday.
The loss puts the Lions at 5-5 in conference play and 12-10 overall, while the Profs solidified their hold on second place improving to 7-3 and 14-7 overall.
The game got off to a good start for the Lions as they led by as many as 11 points in the opening frame. That margin came with 4:41 remaining before halftime as TCNJ doubled up the Profs at 22-11 when freshman Candace Vigo (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Tech.) converted on a lay-up. The Lions maintained the lead the rest of the period and led 26-19 at the break.
Rowan started the second half with a 15-4 run to take a 34-30 advantage and TCNJ was never able to wrestle the lead back from the Profs as the hosts held on for the win.
TCNJ had a balanced attack on the offensive end as junior Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Vigo each finished with nine points and sophomore Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) netted eight. The trio of junior Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep), junior Stephanie Prall (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), and sophomore Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) each finished with seven points, while Washington led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Lions are idle until Wednesday, February 10 when they head to Rutgers University - Camden to face the Scarlet Raptors in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
