Flemington, NJ... The College of New Jersey baseball team pounded out 20 hits en route to a 16-6 win over Muhlenberg College.
The Lions (4-6) scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings as Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) led the attack with four hits, a triple, and two RBIs. Sophomore Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) ignited TCNJ's offense with a two-out, two-run homer to right-center in the top of the first and the Lions were off and running. He finished the day with three hits, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
Sophomore James Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy) was active for the first time this season and celebrated with two singles, a double, and three runs scored. Senior Ryan Anzelone (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) drove in two runs on two hits including a double.
Freshman Mike Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) was productive in his at bats driving in five runs. Murphy pushed a runner across the plate with a groundout, drove a run in with a sacrifice fly, and cleared the bases with a bases loaded double.
Senior Greg Spatz (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) earned his second mound-victory of the season. Spatz (2-0) did not allow the large lead to diminish his concentration as he tossed six scoreless frames before being touched for two runs in the seventh. The veteran right-hander scattered ten hits while striking out eight.
Juniors Bobby Spindler (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) and Eli Branzburg (Lower Marion, Pa./The Shipley School) each had two hits for the Mules while senior Dan Fisher (Solebury, Pa/Newhope-Solebury) and freshman Joseph Vila (Millington, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) each had two-run doubles. Kevin Witmier (1-1) took the loss for the Muhlenberg.
Jason Zegarski (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) tallied two more hits as every Lions starter registered at least one hit on the day. Zegarski and Galeotafiore both extended their hitting streaks to 10 games.
