Allentown, PA...The College of New Jersey's offense accounted for 18 runs on 25 hits in a two-game sweep at Muhlenberg College on Tuesday as the Lions needed only six innings to win each game.
TCNJ started the day with a 9-0 win in six innings and completed the sweep with a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.
The two victories bump TCNJ's record to 10-2 on the year, while Muhlenberg is 4-9.
Next up for the Lions is the home opener set for Thursday, March 25 as TCNJ hosts defending national champion and fourth-ranked Messiah College for a doubleheader at Lions' Park. The first game is slated for 3 p.m.
Game 1
TCNJ 9, Muhlenberg 0 (6 innings)
TCNJ got off to a fast start in the opening game as senior Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) drove in Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls) with a base hit in the top of the first inning to get the team rolling.
The Lions kept things going in the second exploding for five runs as Seavers delivered a key two-run single in the inning. Sophomore Katelyn Congilose (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) also plated a run with a base hit.
In the sixth, TCNJ capped the win with three more runs as Lee stole home, Seavers drove in another with a base hit, and Dani Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest) drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to center
Senior Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) fired five shutout innings to pick up the win, while junior Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) pitched a perfect final inning.
Seavers had a huge game at the plate going 4-for-4 with four RBI, while Congilose added a pair of hits.
Game 2
TCNJ 9, Muhlenberg 2 (6 innings)
Muhlenberg opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with an unearned run, but the Lions bounced right back in the third scoring three times. Freshman Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) tied the game with a single before Hagel gave TCNJ the lead for good driving in a pair with a base hit up the middle.
The Lions put the game away in the sixth inning scoring six times collecting seven hits in the inning as 10 players stepped to the plate.
Hagel led the 14-hit attack going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Lee, Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), and Hommen picked up two hits apiece.
Sophomore Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) kept her record perfect as she collected her fifth win of the season allowing three hits over five innings.
