Keating, Jaeger power Lions past Bears, 22-8

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey tied a season high in goals as the Lions erupted for 15 scores in the opening half as they ran past Ursinus College 22-8 on Thursday.

TCNJ, which is ranked fifth in the latest Division III poll, has excelled on its home turf in the early stages of the season scoring 22 goals in each of their home games. The Lions are now 5-0 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 4-2.

Junior Ali Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and sophomore Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) each played key roles in getting the team out to a 15-4 lead at the half scoring five goals before the break.

Keating also had the offensive touch early in the second half converting a pair of free-position attempts in the opening minutes extending TCNJ's lead to 17-4.

The Lions' biggest lead of the game came at 21-6 as sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored on a nice feed from senior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley).

Keating had a career game for the Lions with seven goals, matching her total from her freshman season. Those goals give her a career-high of nine on the year.

Jaeger, who ranks first nationally in points per game at 8.0, had another steady game with six goals and one assist. In five games this season, Jaeger has racked up 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists. Mitchell added to the win with four goals and one assist, while senior Robin Deehan (Morris Plains, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) scored twice and set up two others.

Seldeen finished with a game-high four assists.

For Ursinus, Kim Peifer (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) scored twice and Elizabeth Cannon (Garrison, NY/James I. O'Neil) scored once and dished out a pair of assists.

TCNJ goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) picked up the win as she finished with four saves.

For Ursinus, goalie Alex McBride (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) led the Bears with six stops.

The Lions return to the road on Tuesday, March 30 with a game at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, while the Bears host McDaniel College on Saturday.
