Hoboken, NJ…Stevens Institute of Technology closed the game on a three-goal run to rally past The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team on Thursday as the Ducks pulled out a 16-14 win over the Lions.
The loss knocked third-ranked TCNJ to 14-2 on the season, while the 12th-ranked Ducks improved to that same 14-2 record. The loss was the first loss against a ranked opponent for the Lions as they had won their previous three meetings.
TCNJ closes out the regular season on Sunday, May 2 taking on another ranked opponent heading to eighth-ranked SUNY Cortland.
The Lions held a 14-13 lead with 7:04 remaining as senior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored unassisted. That turned out to be the final goal of the game for TCNJ as Stevens netted the final three goals to pull out a 16-14 win.
In the opening half, the Ducks claimed an early 2-1 lead before the Lions tied the game as junior Ali Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored on a feed from Seldeen.
The Lions then got a free-position goal by freshman Jillian Nealon (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) with 14:11 showing on the clock and 45 seconds later senior Robin Deehan (Morris Plains, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) scored unassisted doubling TCNJ's advantage.
The Lions would extend that advantage to 7-2 as Seldeen, Nealon, and Jaeger rattled off consecutive goals.
Jaeger halted that modest Stevens run that closed the gap to three goals, but the Ducks netted a pair of quick scores in the final 1:17 of the half to close it even further as TCNJ held onto an 8-6 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Ducks scored first making it a one-goal game, but sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) heated up offensively for the Lions as she ripped off three straight goals and Seldeen added another as the Lions grabbed a 12-7 lead.
The hosts then stormed back scoring five straight times to tie the score, but Deehan briefly gave TCNJ back the lead with her third goal of the game.
Stevens again tied the game at 13-13 before Seldeen gave the Lions their final lead with a shade over seven minutes remaining.
Seldeen, Notos, Jaeger, and Deehan each picked up hat tricks for TCNJ and Nealon chipped in with a pair of scores. Seldeen also dished out a pair of assists and Notos had one.
Junior goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) had nine saves for the Lions.
