Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to eight straight as the Lions opened New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a 15-1 triumph over Rutgers University – Camden on Tuesday.
Fifth-ranked TCNJ is an unblemished 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, while the first-year Scarlet Raptors are 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the NJAC.
The game with Rutgers-Camden was the final tune-up for the Lions before top-ranked and undefeated Salisbury University visits Lions' Stadium on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
The Lions were very efficient early scoring on seven of their first eight shots of the game before racing out to a 9-0 lead. Sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) played a key role in the fast start scoring three of those goals, while senior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) did her part scoring once and setting up three others.
The Scarlet Raptors spoiled TCNJ's shutout bid with 8:56 remaining in the half as Alexa Giampietro (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) netted an unassisted marker.
TCNJ capped the half with two more goals with Notos getting the latter of those with 1:22 left before the break.
The Lions controlled the time of possession in the second half as junior Ali Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon), sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Notos, and senior Robin Deehan (Morris Plains, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) each scored.
Notos led all players with five goals, while Jaeger had four goals and two assists leaving her one point shy of joining TCNJ's 200-point club. Mitchell added one goal with four assists, while Seldeen scored once and assisted on three others.
Freshman Courtney Amburg (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) added to the win for the Lions with her first collegiate goal.
TCNJ goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) had to make only one save to pick up her eighth win of the season.
Freshman Rachel Powell (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made three saves.
The Scarlet Raptors have a break in the schedule as they don't return to the field April 19 with a road game at Lancaster Bible College.
