Haverford, PA...The College of New Jersey softball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end in the opening game of a doubleheader at Haverford College on Thursday as the Lions came back to garner a split with the Fords.
The hosts won the opening game by the score of 2-1 with both runs coming in the bottom of the seventh inning, while TCNJ bounced back to win the second game, 5-0.
TCNJ, which is ranked eighth in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association, is now 18-4 on the season.
The split denied TCNJ head coach Sally Miller her 400th career win and she and the rest of the Lions will attempt to reach that milestone win this weekend in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rutgers University-Newark. Miller, who is in her 15th season at the helm of TCNJ's program, has a career mark of 399-180-2.
The Fords are now 12-10 on the year.
Game 1
Haverford College 2, TCNJ 1
The Fords scored their only two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double from Cassandra Searls. That hit came with two outs.
The Lions got a manufactured run right off of the bat in the opener as Crystal Lee (Dover, NJ/Morris Knolls) walked, swiped second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and cover the final 60 feet on a ground out by Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood).
Senior Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) suffered the loss on the mound for the Lions allowing only those two runs on five hits, while striking out five.
Lee created havoc on the base paths all game for the Lions as she finished with three stolen bases.
Game 2
TCNJ 5, Haverford College 0
The Lions started the second game identical to the first scoring a run in the opening inning. This time, Hommen got things started with a double and scored on a RBI single by senior Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood).
TCNJ bumped that margin up to 3-0 in the third as Hommen drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Seavers lofted a sacrifice fly center.
Junior Caitlin Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) helped the Lions grab a 4-0 lead as she tripled down the right field line and scored two batters later on a ground out.
Freshman Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) capped the scoring in the top of the seventh as she singled home Lee making it a 5-0 game.
Lion hurler Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) fired a complete-game shutout as she recorded her career-high 10th win of the season. The shutout was her fourth of the season and she finished with nine strikeouts.
Lee had another steady game for the Lions picking up three hits, scoring twice, and swiping a pair of bases.
