Madison, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team scored a pair of early goals and then protected that lead as the Lions defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham 3-1 on Saturday.

The victory keeps the 17th-ranked Lions undefeated on the season at a perfect 5-0 on the year, while the Devils slipped to 2-3.

The Lions didn't waste any time taking the lead as senior Jessica Falcone (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) opened the scoring 4:10 into the game. That goal came unassisted and was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Junior Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) added her first goal of the year cashing in on a penalty stroke just 1:05 later doubling the TCNJ advantage to 2-1.

In the second half, the Lions made it 3-0 as junior Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored midway through the period, but the Devils got that score right back with a goal of their own 1:55 later.

Junior goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made that that lead held as she racked up her fifth win in as many games finishing with a pair of saves.

TCNJ face its third game against a ranked opponent on Tuesday, September 14 as they head to Eastern University to face the 19th-ranked Eagles in a 4 p.m. start.
