Ewing, NJ… Ursinus College capped off a wild final 15 minutes scoring the game-winning goal with 2:12 remaining as the Bears held off a pair of The College of New Jersey rallies to pull out a 3-2 field hockey win on Tuesday at Lions' Stadium.
The fourth-ranked Bears (5-1) got that deciding goal from senior Jennifer Bayzick (Sugarloaf, PA/Hazelton Area) with just over two minutes remaining as she slipped a high shot into the Lion net.
The loss knocked 12th-ranked TCNJ to 6-2.
That goal came just 2:12 after Lion freshman Sarah Cummings (Summit, NJ/Summit) scored her first collegiate goal forcing a 2-2 tie. That goal was scored with an assist from Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
Earlier in the half with TCNJ trailing 1-0, Lion sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) pulled the hosts even as she picked up her second goal of the season with 14:02 left in regulation cashing in on a nice feed from senior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright).
The lead was short lived; however, as Megan Yoder (Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) broke the tie just 1:31 making it a 2-1 Ursinus lead.
All four goals in the second half were scored in a span of 11:50 in the game's final 15 minutes.
In the opening half, the Bears got the quick jump on the Lions as Yoder knocked in a rebound 4:55 into the game.
TCNJ came close to tying the game minutes later, but Bear goalie LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (Bethlehem, PA/George School) stopped Notos from close range on a play that started on a penalty corner.
Junior goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) finished with a season-high 12 saves for the Lions.
In goal for the Bears, Lightwood-Mater made three saves.
TCNJ opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 25 hosting William Paterson University in a 1 p.m. start in Lions' Stadium.
