Lions deal Knights 5-0 setback

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team won its second straight game by the score of 5-0 as the Lions this posted the shutout against Neumann University on Monday.

The win put the 12th-ranked at 8-2 on the season, while the Knights dropped to 1-10.

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead as senior Kelly Riley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) banged in a pass from sophomore Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) 9:08 into the game.

The difference remained one until the latter stages of the opening half until sophomore Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) cashed in on her third goal of the season with senior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) picking up the assist. That goal came 2:44 before the break.

In the second half, Notos made it 3-0 with her second of the game before TCNJ finished the game off with two goals in the final 10 minutes in span of 2:04. Freshman Sarah Cummings (Summit, NJ/Summit) got the first of those tipping in a shot from Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), while sophomore Christy Wham (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) capped the scoring knocking in another shot by Mitchell.

Junior goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) benefitted from a solid effort from TCNJ's defensive unit as she picked up her fourth shutout of the season without having to make a save.

The Lions outshot the Knights 28-0 for the game and took all 20 penalty corners.

Neumann goalie Maggie Carpenter (Salem, NJ/Woodstown) finished with eight saves.

The Lions return to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Friday, October 1 hosting Richard Stockton College in a 7:30 p.m. start.
