Men's soccer topped by Lynchburg 1-0 in OT

Box score

Fredericksburg, VA ... The College of New Jersey men's soccer engaged in another overtime battle but came out on the short end as Lynchburg College netted the game-winner just over three minutes into the first overtime period to claim a 1-0 victory.

The Hornets' Scott Colman knocked in a cross from teammate Cam Smith to give Lynchburg (2-1) its second win in as many days. The Lions (0-2-1) played tough in a physical match, but were denied their first victory of the 2010 season. TCNJ played host University of Mary Washington to a 1-1 tie yesterday.

The Lions nearly took the lead midway through the opening half. Junior Chris Pisano (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) drilled the post with a shot in the 23rd minute of the game, and sophomore Alex Kirchner (Eschborn, Germany/Goethe University) was there to follow up. But his shot was blocked by a Lynchburg defender to keep the game scoreless.

The Lions outshot the Hornets 9-5 in regulation. TCNJ goalkeeper sophomore Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell) made a pair saves and hadn't permitted a goal since the opening half of the UMW tie. But Lynchburg capitalized on its scoring chance in OT to give Hornet goalie Michael Henry his first shutout of the year.

After playing three games in five days, the Lions can rest up until Friday, when they travel to Elizabethtown to compete in the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic. TCNJ squares off against Elmhurst College at 5 p.m. on Friday night.
