Ewing, NJ…There was plenty of offense as The College of New Jersey field hockey team hosted Johns Hopkins University with the Lions outscoring the Blue Jays for a 6-3 win on Tuesday.
The win puts the sixth-ranked at 11-2 on the season, while Blue Jays fell to 5-7.
It was busy on the scoreboard in the first half as the Blue Jays opened the scoring 5:35 into the period, as Meghan Kellett (Audobon, PA/Villa Maria Academy) raced up the near side and sent a low shot just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
TCNJ responded strong ripping off three straight goals starting with
Camille Passucci (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) tipping in a shot from
Erin Waller (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) that tied the score 6:21 after the Blue Jays took the lead.
Senior
Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) netted her first goal of the season with 12:45 left in the first half as she knocked in a short feed from
Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway). That lead was extended to 3-1 minutes later as senior
Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) punched in a rebound for her sixth goal of the season.
Johns Hopkins crept one goal closer before the end of the period as Ali Bahneman (Flanders, NJ/Mendham) setup Maggie Phillips (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) for a goal on a penalty corner.
TCNJ came out firing in the second half scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. Mitchell got the first of those goals scoring from a sharp angle after taking a pass from
Cassandra Martin (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson). Martin then netted her first of the season minutes later redirecting a pass into the arc from Okuniewicz on a play that started on a penalty corner. Those goals came 3:17 apart.
Jenkins bumped that lead up to 6-2 making a nice move in front of the Blue Jay net, but the visitors got that goal back as Annie Shepard (Grosse Pointe Park, MI/Grosse Pointe South) rounded out the scoring bringing the deficit back to three.
Mitchell finished with a pair of goals, while Jenkins and Martin each had one goal and one assist.
Lion goalie
Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) finished with six saves.
In goal for the Blue Jays, senior Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) finished with 13 saves, reaching double figures in saves for the second straight game.
Next up for the Lions is a big New Jersey Athletic Conference road game at seventh-ranked Montclair State University on Saturday. Both teams will enter that game with unblemished 3-0 conference records.
