Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey field hockey team moved to within one win of sweeping its way through the regular season in the New Jersey Athletic Conference play as the Lions posted a 4-0 shutout win over Kean University on Tuesday.

The win kept fifth-ranked TCNJ unbeaten in conference play at 5-0, while moving to 13-2 overall. The Cougars saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. It was Kean's first loss since September 13 when they fell to Montclair State in overtime.

This fall the NJAC will hold a conference tournament with the top two seeds hosting semifinal games on November 2, with the winners playing on November 5 at the highest remaining seed. The winner of the NJAC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Lions played with the lead most of the game thanks to an early goal by
Christy Wham (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). Wham banged in a short pass from
Alex Okuniewicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) for her ninth goal of the season just 3:42 into the game.

That advantage doubled later in the half as
Caitlyn Jenkins (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) weaved her way through the Kean defense and put a low shot past Cougar goalie Erin Langan (Millburn, NJ/Millburn) for her sixth tally of the year.

In the second half, Okuniewicz made it 3-0 as she picked up her own rebound and sent a low shot into the Kean net. That goal came 10:37 into the new period.

That goal came less than two minutes after Kean's Kelly Bachovchin (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) made a defensive save on a shot by TCNJ's
Erin Waller (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.).

Okuniewicz capped the scoring with 1:23 left in the game as she exchanged passes with Waller, sending the return pass into the cage for her second goal of the game. That goal originated on a penalty corner.

TCNJ's defense bottled up Kean's Olivia Triano (Keyport, NJ/Keyport), who entered the game leading the conference in both goals and points. She got off six of the team's eight shots, but came up empty on the score sheet.

 Lion goalie
Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) posted five saves for her fifth shutout.

Langan made seven stops for the Cougars.

TCNJ continues its five-game home stand on Thursday, October 20 taking on Cabrini College at 7:30 p.m., while the Cougars face another ranked team on Friday heading to 17th-ranked Rowan University.  That game is set for 7 p.m.
