Tarnowski leads Lions to victory in season opener

The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team got off to a flawless start to the 2011-2012 season as it won all 14 meet events in a 151-99 victory of New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Ramapo College.
 
The Lions (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) were led by sophomore Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American), who won three individual events on the day. He placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.89, claimed the 200-yard backstroke with a finish of 1:59.30, and then returned to the waters to tap the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley. Tarnowski won that event by posting a time of 1:59.45.
 
Senior Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine), junior Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and junior Matt Peveler (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Passkack Hills) also won multiple events at TCNJ's Aquatic Center. Clark won the 200-yard freestyle event, registering a time of 1:47.36. He cut the distance in half in his next race, but got the same result with the 100-free in 48.67.
 
Paulan won the 100-yard breast stroke event with a finish of 1:01.64 and also took top honors in the 100-yard butterfly (53.84). Peveler dominated the distance events winning the 1000-yard freestyle race, finishing in 10:29.92. Later in the meet, he won the 500-free with a time of 5:00.77.
 
Freshman Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's) earned his first collegiate win when he posted the fastest time in the 100-yard back (53.68). He also joined forces with Paulan, Clark, and sophomore Michael Oliva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) in winning the 200-yard medley relay race in 1:37.01.
 
Clark, senior Jesse Taylor (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley), sophomore Philip Hawley (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), and freshman Matthew VanBiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) teamed up to win the final event of the meet, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:14.53.
 
TCNJ is back in action next Friday when they visit Montclair State University for their second NJAC contest. They return to TCNJ's Aquatic Center on Saturday, November 5 when they host Southern Connecticut State University.
