York, PA – The College of New Jersey wrestling team tied for third place at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College on Saturday, while two individuals won their respective weight classes.
The 24
th-ranked Lions collected 85.5 points, trailing only fourth-ranked Ithaca College (107) and 15
th-ranked The College at Brockport. They finished in a tie with the host institution.
Senior
Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) had a huge day as he won the 184-pound weight class going a perfect 4-0 on the day and in the process was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. Denver finished with a pair of pins on the day, with his final one coming in the finals. In that title match, the top two wrestlers in the country at 184 took the mat as Denver is ranked second behind York's Alex Martocello. Denver won this title in exciting fashion as the pinned Martocello 29 seconds into overtime capping his big day.
Those four wins put the two-time All-American at 16-2 on the season and raised his career win total to 122.
Junior
John Darling (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had a busy day at 149 pounds winning his weight class with an impressive 5-0 day. He claimed the title winning by injury default in 2:56 against Derek Brenon from Ithaca.
Senior
Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) advanced to the finals at 133 pounds before falling to Nathaniel Fitzenreider from North Central (IL). Fitzenreider is ranked first nationally in that weight class and Herr entered the tournament 10
th. The Lion finished the day going 3-1.
TCNJ had a pair of wrestlers battle back to finish third in the tournament earning valuable team points. Freshman
P.J. Schmidt (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) went 4-1 at 125 pounds, while sophomore
Zach Zotollo (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) went 5-1 at 165 as each placed third.
Junior
Anthony Damico (Nutley, Nutley) added to the team's success by placing fourth at 149.
The Lions are idle until the calendar changes over to 2012 when they compete at the annual North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday, January 7.
