Glassboro, NJ...Faced with a must-win game at conference rival Rowan, The College of New Jersey women's basketball team turned in a solid effort from start to finish as the Lions never trailed in a 67-55 win over the Profs on Monday.
The win was the third straight for TCNJ as the team improved to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. With the win, the Lions remain in the hunt for a playoff spot trailing the Profs, which fell to 6-4 in conference play.
In the opening half, TCNJ scored the game's first five points and never looked back leading by as many as eight points on three different occasions before going into the break holding a 31-25 advantage.
In the second half, Rowan trimmed the deficit to 40-35, but the Lions responded with a modest 8-0 pushing the margin to double figures. That run was highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by juniors
Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and
Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy).
The Lions protected that lead the rest of the way keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Imhof led all scorers with a career-high 22 points as she was a blistering 5-for-7 from 3-point range. Senior
Alex Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angles) added 16 points as she is now five points away from becoming the program's 13th player to reach 1,000 career points.
Tait was the third Lion to reach double figures as she finished with 10, while
Stephanie Prall (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) added eight.
The Lions return to Packer Hall on Wednesday, February 9 when they take on Stockton at 6 p.m. The program will celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sport Day. TCNJ athletics is offering free admission to all girls ages 8-14 and fans can meet the Lions' players after the game for a meet and greet session. In addition, all girls will receive Kay Yow pink shoelaces to raise breast cancer awareness.
