Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team dropped a 66-60 decision to Richard Stockton College on Wednesday night.
The Lions (13-10, 6-6 NJAC) need to defeat Rowan University on February 16 coupled with a Prof loss to have a chance to make their way into the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
At the 9:34 mark of the opening half, senior
Alex Gregorek (Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) became the 13th player in Lions program history to score 1,000 points in her career. She knocked down an off-balance shot in the paint to reach the milestone. Gregorek finished with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
The Lions simply did not shoot the ball well, hitting just 20-of-71 shots from the field) and seeing their three-game winning streak halted. The Ospreys (16-7, 8-3 NJAC) packed it in down low, making it difficult for TCNJ to get clean shots off in the paint.
Stockton, who clinched a home game in the NJAC playoffs, had four players in double figures and a pair with double-doubles. Sophomore Che'Na Thompson (Salem, NJ/Salem) led the attack with 19 points. Freshman Lauren Alwan (Winslow, NJ/Timber Creek) had 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior LaTonya Oliver (West Berlin, NJ/Overbrook) compiled 12 points and 10 boards.
Despite 15 turnovers in the first half, the Ospreys held a 26-23 advantage. TCNJ battled from behind throughout the second half, but could not get over the hump at any point. Each time the Lions gained some ground, the Ospreys responded with a counter-punch.
Junior
Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notred Dame Academy) scored 10 points and nabbed four steals, while senior
Stephanie Prall (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) also chipped in with 10 points and a pair of rebounds.
Senior Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain) added 13 points on six of nine shooting and also had four assists and four steals.
The Lions are idle until that game on Wednesday, February 16 when they square off against Rowan in Packer Hall at 6 p.m.
