Glassboro, NJ... The College of New Jersey softball team used another complete effort to keep its run through the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament going as the Lions knocked off their second straight higher seed with a 1-0 win over William Paterson University on Friday in Glassboro, NJ.
The fifth-seeded Lions improved to 26-12 on the year and remain in the winner's bracket of the tournament where they will face sixth-seeded Kean University. The Cougars are the defending tournament champions and are also 2-0 after eliminating fourth-seeded Ramapo College earlier in the day, 6-3. That game is slated for 10 a.m., while the winner advances to Sunday's title game and loser plays an elimination game at 2 p.m.
The loss knocked the third-seeded Pioneers to 27-9 on the year as they face second-seeded Montclair State University on Saturday at noon on Friday. All games are being played at Rowan University.
The Lions won for the second time in the tournament by a 1-0 score as they got a timely hit, solid pitching, and a flawless performance from its defense. TCNJ opened the tournament with a 1-0 win at Montclair State in nine innings.
That timely hit came early as sophomore
Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) came up with a clutch two-out double in the bottom of the first inning easily scoring
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) from third base.
Junior
Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) had another tremendous outing on the mound with another shutout as she ran her scoreless inning streak in the tournament to 16. She scattered six hits and finished with five strike outs, none bigger than in the sixth inning as she fanned the final batter with a pair of runners in scoring position. It was also her team-leading 10th win and sixth shutout.
TCNJ had plenty of balance through the line-up with three players each getting a pair of hits. Huttner finished with a pair of doubles, while Sogluizzo and
Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) each singled twice.
