Ewing, NJ… Eastern University scored the game's only goal midway through the second half as the Eagles dealt sixth-ranked The College of New Jersey field hockey team a 1-0 setback on Tuesday.

The loss put the Lions at 2-1 on the season, while the Eagles moved to 1-2. Eastern has had TCNJ's number the last two seasons winning both matchups by 1-0 scores.

The Eagles netted the only goal of the game with 21:49 remaining on a play that originated on a penalty corner. TCNJ's defense stepped up and blocked the initial shot, but Eastern's Yvonne Herbster (Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) was there to pick up the free ball and score her second goal of the season.

The Lions had two penalty corners after the goal, but each time the Eagles were able to withstand TCNJ's attack. They also had a quality scoring chance when senior Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) beat an Eastern defender on the corner, but her shot was denied by from close range by the Eagle goalie.

TCNJ goalie Shannon Syciarz (Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) came up big throughout the game as she recorded six saves in the first half and seven more in the second for a season-high 13.

TCNJ starts New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Friday, September 16 at William Paterson University. Game time is 7 p.m.
