Elizabethtown, PA... Ithaca College scored the winning goal with less than a minute remaining as The College of New Jersey women's soccer team dropped its season opener 2-1 on Saturday.
The game was rematch of last fall's NCAA Tournament game where the Lions advanced to the regional round with a 3-0 win on their home field. This time around, the two teams met on the first day of the 2011 Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College with the Bombers coming out on top.
TCNJ scored the only goal of the opening on a play that started deep in its own end of the field. Sophomore goalie
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) hit a booming punt that sophomore
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) ran onto and turned into a 1-0 Lion lead.
Ithaca tied the game midway through the second half, before getting the deciding goal in the final minute.
Griffith made one save for TCNJ, while freshman
Cristina Gacos (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) also had one stop.
The Lions round out the tournament tomorrow facing Stevenson University at 2:30 p.m.
