Ramapo, NJ – The College of New Jersey's
Dawn Henderson joined an exclusive group on Saturday as she became the 28
th head coach in NCAA Division III women's basketball history to reach the 400-win plateau. In fitting fashion, Henderson and her Lions got that win with a complete effort at Ramapo College 55-45.
The win put the Lions at 11-5 on the season and an even 3-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. By beating the Roadrunners, Henderson improved to 400-198 for her career and she is also TCNJ all-time leader in wins with 354 wins.
The loss dropped Ramapo to 2-3 in conference play and 10-5 overall.
TCNJ took charge right from the opening tip as sophomore
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) knocked down a 3-pointer just 21 seconds into the game as the Lions never looked back.
After a Ramapo bucket with 15:40 left in the half cut TCNJ's advantage making it 7-4, the Lions dominated the rest of the opening frame. Senior
Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) kicked off a modest 8-0 run, but it was the defense that kept Ramapo stuck on four points as they held the hosts scoreless for 6:15 and extended the lead to 15-4.
The team put together another string of defensive stops later keeping the hosts off of the scoreboard for the final 4:04 of the half. Offensively, TCNJ continued to build its lead closing with an 11-0 run as senior
Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) scored the final six of that spurt as the Lions doubled up the Roadrunners 34-17 at the break.
The Lions continued to roll in the second half scoring the first six points of the fresh frame extending their lead to 39-17. Tait accounted for the first three of those points with a bucket from behind the 3-point arc, while senior
Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) got the other half on a conventional 3-point play.
TCNJ then protected that advantage the rest of the way never allowing the Roadrunners to get any closer than 10 points, which turned out to be the final difference in Coach Henderson's milestone win.
Tait led all scorers with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, and also snared eight rebounds. Imhof and Kutch added to the win as each player had 12 points apiece.
The Lions return home on Wednesday, January 18 for another key NJAC tilt hosting Rutgers University-Camden at 6 p.m. in Packer Hall.
